North Texas Accepts Automatic Bid To NIVC
Mean Green Face Oral Roberts In First Round
DENTON - For just the second time in program history, the North Texas volleyball team is headed to a postseason tournament after accepting an automatic bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC). The Mean Green will host Oral Roberts in the first round at 7 p.m. Thursday.
“We’re disappointed about not making the NCAA Tournament, but we’re really excited to be playing in the NIVC,” North Texas head coach Andrew Palileo said.
With a win, North Texas would face the winner of TCU and Wyoming, who face off at the North Texas Volleyball Center at 4 p.m. Thursday. The second round game would be played at 7 p.m. Friday in Denton.
North Texas (28-3) is coming off a record-setting 2017 season, which has included the school's first regular season conference championship. The Mean Green entered the C-USA tournament as the No. 1 seed but went on to fall to No. 2-seed Western Kentucky, 3-1, in the conference championship game, snapping North Texas' 16-match win streak.
“We’re proud of our body of work this season and we’re looking forward to continuing our historical season another week,” Palileo said.
The program’s last postseason appearance was in 1995, when the Mean Green won the Southland Conference tournament to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. North Texas was swept by USC in the first round of the tournament.
