DENTON (11/17/06) One of the best season’s in North Texas volleyball history came to a close Friday night, as the Mean Green fell to Middle Tennessee 3-1 (30-20, 23-30, 30-25, 30-27) in the semifinals of the Johnny Carino’s Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament.
The loss snapped a nine-match conference home winning streak for the Mean Green (23-14). The squad had not lost to a SBC team at home since Western Kentucky on Sept. 29.
The Blue Raiders (26-7) hit a gaudy .484 in the first game, and over .280 in the final two games. All-conference selection Ashley Adams tallied a game-high 23 kills for the evening.
The Mean Green (23-14) received outstanding performances for the second straight night from each of its seniors. Brittney Gregory closed out her decorated career with 15 kills, only two shy of her season high. Tara Hooser finished with 11 kills, reaching double-figures for the third consecutive match.
Brooke Engel dropped in two more aces to place her total for the season at 123, the third-highest ever in the SBC.
In 2006, the Mean Green saw a number of records fall including Cassie Headrick becoming the school’s all-time winningest coach. Its win over New Orleans in the tournament’s first round marked only the second-ever win in SBC Tournament history.
The Blue Raiders will advance to take on Florida International, who took out defending-champion Western Kentucky 3-1 in the nightcap.
