MIAMI – North Texas fell at Denver in its regular season finale, but it ended up not mattering in the Sun Belt Tournament seeding. The Mean Green entered the weekend as the No. 6 seed and finished in the same spot, and has earned a first-round showdown with No. 3 Arkansas State. Again.
This will be the second straight season that North Texas and Arkansas State will meet in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament. Last year No. 5 NT knocked off No. 4 ASU to advance to the semifinals of the SBC Tournament for just the third time since joining the league. Amy Huddleston landed 15 kills on .385 hitting to down the Red Wolves.
NT and Arkansas State split a pair of meetings this year, but the Mean Green took the latest meeting in Denton in a sweep. North Texas hit .351 in downing the Red Wolves back on Nov. 4, which is the program’s best attack percentage in a Sun Belt match since 2008. Melanie Boykins, who went on to win SBC Player of the Week, landed 10 kills on .500 hitting versus ASU.
Arkansas State swept this week’s Sun Belt Player of the Week awards thanks to the contributions of Jasmine Terry (offensive) and Megan Baska (defensive). Terry landed 29 kills on .521 hitting, while Baska averaged 6.67 digs per set in helping the Red Wolves sweep Louisiana-Lafayette and ULM.
