Heroic Performance Fueled Upset Of Western Kentucky
IRVING - Senior outside hitter Alexis Wright was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday. The Arlington, Texas, native compiled 22 kills at a .405 clip in two matches last week.
Wright led the team with 18 kills in a five-set win over Western Kentucky, who received votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll, snapping the Lady Toppers' 38-game conference win streak. She recorded five of the last six kills, including the winning point to secure the program's first win over WKU since 2008.
She followed it up against Middle Tennessee on Saturday with four kills on six attempts without an error, helping the Mean Green to a single-match program-record .600 team hitting percentage. The win also clinched a share of the regular season C-USA championship for [RV] North Texas, its first regular season title in school history.
With the victories last week, the Mean Green secured the top seed in the 2017 C-USA Volleyball Championship, beginning Friday in Bowling Green, Ky. North Texas, who received votes in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll, will face eight-seed Marshall in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday. With advancement, the Mean Green would face the winner of No. 4 UT San Antonio and No. 5 Florida Atlantic at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The second-seed Lady Toppers drew No. 7 Charlotte in the first round, and the winner of that match will take on the winner of No. 3 Rice and No. 6 Southern Miss in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
