Daily Digs with Dudding: Week 11
Take a Behind-the-Scenes Look at #MGVB Through an Athlete's Perspective
Daily Digs is a social media-integrated blog recapping #MGVB's daily happenings, written by student-athlete @Katie_Dudding. The junior defensive specialist takes fans behind-the-scenes through her perspective with a new piece released each week.
Thursday, we made the bus trip down to Houston, Texas to take on the Rice Owls in Tudor Fieldhouse. Heading in with a five game winning streak and the confidence of beating Rice on the road last year for our first win in the series since 1997, we were excited for a chance to redeem ourselves for letting a home loss slip earlier this season. We worked a lot in practice to perfect little things that have to do with defense and some technical changes with our blocking that Coach Vinh has taught us over the course of the last week. Pali asked Vinh, founder of a top volleyball club in California, to fly down to Texas to help out as an assistant coach for our team for the rest of the season, since Sus has not been feeling well lately. We've learned a lot from him and I think he definitely played a part in our big win against Rice on Friday!
After frying Rice in three sets, we hit the road for a late night owl trip home. We seemed to be making decent timing when all of the sudden our bus slowed to a halt on the side of the highway. Our bus was broken down, less than 25 minutes from Denton. After resolving some transportation complications by switching busses nearly an hour and a half later, we finally reached Denton around 2:30am!
Saturday morning came too early for a few of us. Several of us had to be up for North Point club volleyball try-outs so that we, as coaches, could choose who would be on our respective teams in the spring. Amy (head coach) and I (assistant coach) will be teaming up to coach the 14's National team this season and look forward to the experience together! Meanwhile, Carnae and Cami got to have fun being honorary captains at the Mean Green football game!
Sunday was left unscheduled by the conference office but we decided to fill the blank with a metroplex rivalry match with our neighbors just down the road, TCU. Though this game did not affect either of our conference standings, it was exciting to gauge where our team was at this point in our season, matching up with a tough Big 12 Conference foe. Unfortunately for the Horned Frogs, we had been having a lot of fun winning and were not about to end that streak. Conference opponent or not, we were out to beat anyone that crossed our path. We did just that, crushing the Frogs in only three sets, making a statement to all conferences, that we are ready to play at any level. I think it's pretty safe to say that all of our #MGVB family was excited after this big victory!
This week was a huge week for our team and our program, as the fruits of our labor were finally realized. Two of our players, Carnae (offensive) and Amy (setter), received Conference USA player of the week honors. However, the fun didn't stop there! The week became even that much more special when it was announced that Nae was named the AVCA National Player of the Week, the first of such honor for a player in our program's history. This is big for us; we are showing everyone locally AND nationally that we have something unique going on within this team. I am extremely lucky to be a part of something that is so extraordinary, and am excited to see what the rest of the season has in store!
We finish out our season at home inside the North Texas Volleyball Center on Thursday against UTSA at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday we take on UTEP at 5:00 p.m. on Senior Night!
