DENTON, Texas (11/9/09) - Amy Huddleston slammed down 12 kills in a sweep of Louisiana-Lafayette to give the Mean Green volleyball team a sturdy boost in the Sun Belt standings (25-17, 25-17, 25-22).
With the conference tournament just two weeks away, the junior's dozen kills led all attackers and all but assured a North Texas (12-18, 8-8 Sun Belt) berth into the eight-team championship. The win over the Ragin' Cajuns (8-23, 2-14 Sun Belt) vaults NT into a tie with UALR for the No. 7 seed.
The Mean Green visits Arkansas State and UALR next weekend to close out the regular season, and NT could finish as high as the No. 5 seed with a pair of wins and some help from around the Sun Belt. North Texas' magic number to guarantee a trip to back to the tourney is two, and can come in the form of Mean Green wins or Troy losses next weekend.
North Texas kept the Ragin' Cajuns guessing on offense all night, resulting in an NT opponent low -.010 ULL attack percentage. All eight of Louisiana-Lafayette's players had at least two attack errors. Peaking at the right time, two of North Texas' last three opponents have been forced to hitting percentages of .000 or lower.
Sarah Willey patrolled the backcourt with a match-high 11 digs, but the defense didn't stop on the back line. The Mean Green out-blocked ULL 9-1, as Kati Dillard sent back four blocks and Roxana Casvean had three.
Kayla Saey was efficient at setter with 28 assists, and nearly snagged her sixth double-double with eight digs.
