LAS CRUCES, NM (11/9/03) -- The North Texas volleyball team (20-12, 10-3) had a three-match winning streak snapped Sunday, falling 3-0 (21-30, 15-30, 24-30) to New Mexico State (24-5, 13-0) in a Sun Belt Conference match that secured first place in the West Division for the Aggies.
The Mean Green, which has already tied down second place in the division, had to defeat the Aggies to stay in contention for the division title. With two regular-season matches remaining, NMSU has yet to lose a conference match.
North Texas struggled to get much going offensively, finishing with a .124 attack percentage and failing to hit over .100 in two of the three games. The Aggies, on the other hand, posted a .368 attack percentage and hit at least .286 in all three games.
NT couldn’t overcome a New Mexico State attack that had four players record double-figure kills. The Mean Green was led by sophomore Brittney Gregory with eight kills and three blocks. Corina Marginas, who entered the match second in the conference in kills, was held to just six. Senior Stephanie Connors led North Texas defensively with 11 digs.
North Texas limited NMSU to four aces and four blocks, but came up with just 35 digs on 117 attacks by the Aggies. The Mean Green registered six blocks and four aces.
North Texas plays Western Kentucky on Nov. 13 in its final road game and hosts Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 16 in its final regular-season match of the year. Thursday’s match against the Hilltoppers is set to get underway at 7 p.m. and its home outing against the Ragin’ Cajuns will start at 1 p.m.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will begin Nov. 20 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
