DENTON, Texas – The North Texas volleyball team sent off its six seniors in style with a sweep of UALR on Senior-Day Sunday (25-14, 25-19, 25-23).
And it was a four-pack of seniors that put up the firepower that led the Mean Green (16-15, 7-8 Sun Belt West) to the win. Melanie Boykins posted a match-high 10 kills on .500 hitting, while libero Sarah Willey racked up a match-best 10 digs and four aces. Lacy Reasons was a difference-maker with seven kills and four blocks, and Kayla Saey dished out 25 assists.
North Texas started the weekend in eighth place in the Sun Belt standings, but wins over the Arkansas duo has NT in sixth place with one regular season match to go (at Denver). The Mean Green is guaranteed a spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
NT held the Trojans (11-18, 5-9 Sun Belt West) to .097 hitting, which is the fifth time this year the Mean Green has held an opponent under .100 hitting.
The Mean Green served the Trojans off the court in the opening set with five aces – four of which came from Eboni Godfrey. NT out-aced UALR 9-2 overall in the match as both Godfrey and Willey landed four aces each.
NT’s trend of great blocking continued on Sunday. Four Mean Green players teamed up to give NT an 8-5 blocking advantage, including back-to-back blocks from Courtney Windham in the second set that put NT ahead for good at 15-14. A pair of Willey aces closed the second on a 7-1 NT run.
The Trojans put NT in a 4-0 hole to open the third set, but it wouldn’t last long. A powerful Boykins kill turned the tide and tied the match at 21 apiece, and Boykins ended the match moments later with another sendback.
