DENTON (11/4/05) - The North Texas women's volleyball team begins a three-match homestand tonight against Troy at 7 pm in the Snake Pit. The Mean Green hosts South Alabama on Sunday and Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday night.
North Texas and Sun Belt Conference newcomer Troy played each other for the first time ever earlier this season and the Mean Green came away with a 3-0 road win over the Trojans. North Texas extended its winning streak against South Alabama to seven matches with a 3-2 victory in Mobile earlier this season. The Mean Green leads the all-time series 10-3. The Jaguars last victory over the Mean Green came in 2001 when they split the season series as Sun Belt Conference opponents.
North Texas has 1,271 kills this season, which is the 10th most in school history. All six North Texas teams coached by Cassie Headrick now hold a spot among the top-10 teams in school history for single-season kills. Headrick’s 2003 team holds the school record with 2,162 kills to its credit.
Sophomore outside hitter Katy Prokof has recorded a team-high 324 kills this season and is trying to become the 11th player in school history to post at least 400 kills in a year. Four of the seven players that accomplished the feat played for head coach Cassie Headrick.
North Texas’ final four regular-season matches are against Sun Belt Conference West Division opponents. So far this season, the Mean Green is 3-1 against the division with victories over its next two opponents (Troy and South Alabama). The Mean Green will play UL Lafayette in back-to-back matches to close out the regular season. If North Texas wins its matches against Troy and USA this week, it will have 13 season sweeps of a SBC West Division opponent over the last four seasons.
