LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (11/3/06) Cassie Headrick picked up her 100th career win and the Mean Green stayed in the hunt for the Sun Belt’s Western Division crown by sweeping Louisiana-Lafayette (30-17, 30-25, 30-24) on Friday.
The win gives the Mean Green (20-12, 11-5) its 20th win of the season, marking only the fourth time a North Texas team has posted 20 wins in a season. The last time was in 2003 when NT notched 22 wins.
“I think it was a good night for everyone,” Headrick said. “It’s a big win for our team, and as for my personal milestone, it is something that I have to attribute to the players.”
Katy Prokof also hit a milestone of her own as her six kills pushed her over the 1,000-kill barrier for her career. She sits just one kill shy of moving into third place all-time at NT.
NT hit .345 in the first game behind four kills apiece by Tara Hooser and Brittney Gregory. Hooser would finish the night with a game-high 11 kills.
Things would not get much better for the Ragin’ Cajuns (7-19, 4-11) as the Mean Green led for the majority of the second game and finished things off behind a Brooke Engel ace and a kill by Tara Hooser.
In game three it was Engel that provided the separation as she served five aces in a seven-point span to push the lead to 12-5, and NT never looked back.
Engel finished the night with seven aces, pushing her national leading total to 111 on the season. She is now only one ace short of tying for third place in the Sun Belt’s history of single-season aces.
For the night Ashley Bass finished with 34 assists and Jessica Hulsebosch had a game-high 19 digs.
The Ragin’ Cajuns were led by Elizabeth Inman and Rachel Mauti who each finished with nine kills.
North Texas will travel to Monroe on Saturday before taking on the Warhawks in the final road match of the season. The Mean Green will return to action against Denver on Nov. 11 before hosting the Johnny Carino’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament Nov. 15-18.
