Denton (11/2/01) - Brieanne Fowler and Corina Marginas accounted for 29 of the Mean Green’s 56 kills against Middle Tennessee on Friday night, leading the North Texas volleyball team (11-13, 6-6) to a 3-0 victory over the Lady Raiders (8-18, 4-9) in a Sun Belt Conference match.
The Mean Green jumped all over Middle Tennessee in the first game and never looked back, cruising to 30-20, 30-23 and 30-22 victories. North Texas tallied its most kills and digs in a three-game match this season with 56 and 47, respectively. The Mean Green posted a hitting percentage of .296 in comparison to Middle Tennessee’s .147.
"I was happy that we gained the momentum early and were able to keep it," said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. "It was very important for us to play well early against this team because Middle Tennessee has tended to come out strong all season."
The match marked the first time in almost a month that North Texas played a three-game match. The last time the Mean Green only went three games was October 6 when it swept New Orleans at the Snake Pit. Prior to Friday night, UNT’s last five outings had gone a full five games.
"We did exactly what we talked about," said Headrick. "We established a strong passing game and played well defensively."
Fowler (So.; OH; Odessa, Tex.) led the Mean Green with a match-high 15 kills and 13 digs for her 13th double-double of the year. Marginas (So.; OH; Brasov, Romania) narrowly missed her 15th double-double of the season with 14 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Kristin Sheppard (S; Texarkana, Tex.) set up the North Texas offensive attack, finishing the night with a match-high 35 assists. With five players recording at least seven kills and seven digs, North Texas gave a strong team effort.
