Mean Green Pulls Out 3-2 Thriller Over South Alabama

(10/31/04) -- A season-high five North Texas players recorded double-figure kills to lead the Mean Green volleyball team (6-18, 5-6) to its second consecutive win with a thrilling 3-2 (30-22, 26-30, 27-30, 30-24, 16-14) comeback victory over South Alabama (2-18, 1-11) on Sunday at Jaguar Gym.
With the victory, the Mean Green remains tied for second place with New Orleans in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division with a 5-6 league record. North Texas swept the regular-season season series from South Alabama, marking the ninth time in the last three seasons the Mean Green has accomplished the feat against a West Division foe. NT also extended its winning streak against the Jaguars to six matches.
Brittney Gregory paced the Mean Green attack with a career-high 23 kills, which is also the most by a North Texas player this season. The junior middle blocker was impressive, committing just two errors in 41 attacks for a match-high .512 hitting percentage.
The Mean Green jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after opening the match with a dominating 30-22 win. However, USA took the next two games before NT responded by hitting .341 in the fourth game and pulling out a narrow 16-14 victory in the matches final game.
Led by Gregory, Tara Hooser, Katy Prokof, Anne Pope and Erica Wendell with double-digit kills, the Mean Green recorded a season-high 75 kills and hit .238, its third highest attack percentage of the season. NT also posted its most assists this season with 69, including 58 from sophomore setter Heidi Johnson.
While USA actually posted four more kills than the Mean Green, the Jaguars hit .235 in comparison to NT’s .238. USA hit over .300 in one game, while NT posted at least a .310 attack percentage in two of the five games. The Jaguars were led by Morgan Flarity with 27 kills, which ties the fourth most by a SBC player this year.
Prokof, Johnson and Pope each finished with a double-double, while Jessica Hulsebosch led the Mean Green defensively with 19 digs. The freshman libero has now recorded at least 19 digs in five different matches this season.
North Texas will go for its third straight win Friday when it hosts West Division leader New Mexico State in a 7 p.m. match at the Snake Pit. The Aggies have won 12 straight matches and are undefeated this year in Sun Belt Conference action with an 11-0 record.
