Kristin Sheppard (Texarkana, Tex.) - a junior setter on the North Texas volleyball team, was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Mean Green to its school-record tying seventh consecutive victory last weekend.
The junior standout posted her ninth and 10th double-doubles of the season in North Texas’ 3-1 victories over Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock. She almost had a rare triple-double in both matches, recording seven kills, 66 assists and 10 digs versus Arkansas State and eight kills, 59 assists and 14 digs against Arkansas-Little Rock.
Sheppard’s 66 assists in just four games against ASU ties the ninth most in school history for a single match. She averaged 15.6 assists per game for the entire weekend, which is more than the Sun Belt Conference leading average. She also averaged three digs and 1.9 kills per game.
Although this is the first time that Sheppard has been named Sun Belt Player of the Week, she is the second North Texas player to be given the honor. Outside hitter Corina Marginas has been named the league’s player of the week twice this year. Sheppard was named the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year last year and with 2,437 career assists at North Texas, she ranks third on the school’s all-time leader list.
