DENTON, Texas (10/26/09) - Needing huge performances from its prime players, the Mean Green volleyball team got just that from Amy Huddleston and Brittani Youman in two key road wins last weekend. NT needs another great outing from its devastating duo as it hosts Denver tonight at 7 p.m.
North Texas jumped back into the driver's seat in its hunt for a Sun Belt Conference Tournament berth with 3-1 wins at both South Alabama and Troy. Had the SBC Championships started last week, NT would have been the first team on the outside looking in on the tournament, which only takes the league's top eight squads. The Mean Green missed the tournament in 2008 for the first time since joining the conference in 2000.
Amy Huddleston and Brittani Youman were on fire all weekend. Huddleston racked up 32 total kills - 16 kills against both South Alabama and Troy - good for an average of 4.0 kills per set. Against the Jaguars, the junior tallied a .343 attack percentage, and she landed two service aces and five digs at Troy. Huddleston now has 766 career kills and needs just 25 more to tie for 10th place in school history.
Youman tied a personal-high with 18 kills at Troy, and landed a career-best .567 attack percentage. The junior spurred a North Texas offense that hit a season-best .303, and had three players with at least 12 kills. The win was NT's first at Troy since 2005.
North Texas won't have long to celebrate the big wins, as the longest home stand in school history starts on Monday night against Denver. The Mean Green will host six straight Sun Belt opponents in Denton over the next two weeks, which are the most consecutive home matches in program history.
