DENTON, Texas (10/26/08) The Mean Green volleyball team built early leads, but couldn’t hold off a charging Troy squad in a 3-1 loss Sunday (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24).
North Texas (4-19, 2-8 Sun Belt West) raced out to 8-1 and 7-1 leads in the third and fourth sets, respectively, but the Trojans (4-19, 2-8 Sun Belt East) responded both times. Troy posted a 19-8 third-set rally, and ended the match with three straight points in the fourth.
The Mean Green posted a win in the second set on the three-pronged attack of Roxana Casvean, Amy Huddleston and Salah Schoenecke. The trio combined for 10 of NT’s 13 kills, which was just good enough to top Troy.
NT’s Dig for the Cure effort was a success as the Mean Green collected donations for each dig in the match. Troy and North Texas combined for 80 digs, and all proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Marelle Lepmets was once again efficient at setter, but added a defensive element to her game for NT. The Garden City transfer tallied 39 assists and 10 digs for her first double-double of the year.
Amy Huddleston had her highest offensive output in 10 matches, landing a team-high 12 kills on 18 attacks. Her stellar attack percentage of .556 is still just the her third best outing of the year.
The Mean Green now embarks on the longest conference road trip in school history six straight matches. NT will face Denver on Tuesday and UALR on Friday before heading to Jonesboro to take on Arkansas State.
