JONESBORO, Ark. (10/25/02) The North Texas volleyball team (13-12, 7-1) won its sixth consecutive match Friday with a 3-1 victory over Arkansas State (9-15, 3-5) in a Sun Belt Conference match.
For the first time in its last five outings North Texas failed to sweep its opponent as its school-record 15 game winning streak came to an end with a 30-28 loss in the second game. The Mean Green won the remaining three games by scores of 30-25, 30-27 and 30-22.
The Mean Green claimed its seventh Sun Belt Conference victory of the season, tying its total for all of last season. The Mean Green also picked up its 13th overall victory of the season, giving the team its highest win total since 1995.
Four North Texas players tallied double-figure kills and two recorded a double-double. Corina Marginas (Jr.; OH; Brasov, Romania) accounted for a match-high 22 kills, while Jill Ruskowski (Jr.; OH; Richmond, Tex.) finished with 18, Brittney Gregory (Fr.; MB; Klein, Tex.) followed her with 13 and Tanya Samples (Sr.; MB; Nocona, Tex.) had 11. Ruskowski led the Mean Green defensively with a match-high 12 digs, giving her seven double-doubles on the year. Kristin Sheppard (Jr.; S; Texarkana, Tex.) captured her ninth double-double with 10 digs and a match-best 66 assists.
Both Arkansas State and UNT hit over .200, but the Mean Green posted a .307 percentage in comparison to the Lady Indians .201 mark. North Texas had 16 more digs than ASU, but attempted just 13 more attacks.
North Texas will play at Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m.
