CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A week ago the North Texas volleyball team was competing for Conference USA's top spot. Fast forward to now, and the Mean Green finds itself right in the middle of the conference rat race.
Such is life given the competitive state of C-USA volleyball - and it illustrates the importance of the team's next match against the Charlotte 49ers, set for Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
North Texas (14-10, 6-3) is coming off two gut-wrenching losses against #22 WKU and Rice. In each of those matches, the Mean Green lost by five or less points in the fifth set. Had those contests gone NT's way, the team would be sitting at first place in the league. Instead, North Texas finds itself at No. 4 in the conference standings, tied with the Owls of Rice.
Five-time C-USA Offensive Player of the Week Carnae Dillard is coming off her third straight weekly honor from the conference. The senior had 28 kills and 23 digs in Wednesday's matchup with Rice, but it wasn't enough to get the win on the road in Houston.
Charlotte (6-15, 3-7) hasn't had the year it probably hoped for at the season's start, but the 49ers are coming off a huge five-set upset win over Marshall on Friday. Prior to that victory, the Niners had lost four straight in three-set sweeps.
Despite any woes the 49ers have encountered in 2015, Sunday's home team actually owns the 2-1 advantage in this all-time series, including a 3-1 win in Denton last October.
Charlotte undoubtedly has some individual talent. Senior Sarah McDonald is the team's primary offensive threat. With 3.66 points per set, she comes in at 10th on the league's list of top scorers. Junior Shelby Green is a dual weapon for the 49ers, as she is sixth in C-USA for digs (4.23 d/s) and third in service aces (29, .38 sa/s).
• The Mean Green's sole victory in the NT-Charlotte series came in 2013, a 3-0 win on October 11 in Denton.
• Kills leader Carnae Dillard is 64 kills away from setting the program's all-time record. She leads the NCAA in kills (508) and kills per set (5.40), while having tallied 16 double-doubles this season.
• North Texas sits at No. 93 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings released on Monday, leading a Charlotte team that sits at the No. 197 spot.
• Sophomore Amanda Chamberlain is hitting .344 on the season. That's good for sixth in C-USA and second in team history for an individual season.
