DENTON, Texas (10/24/08) North Texas opened the match against South Alabama looking like the volleyball team that owned powerhouse Western Kentucky on Sunday. But the Mean Green couldn’t contain a resilient Jaguar squad which turned the tides to win 3-1 (14-25, 25-18, 26-25, 25-14).
The Mean Green (4-18, 2-7 Sun Belt West) jumped all over USA (10-9, 4-7 Sun Belt East) in the opening frame, landing 15 kills on .357 hitting. Breanne Owens and North Texas had the Jaguars on their heels with seven aces, including four from the freshman.
After coming out of the second intermission tied at a set apiece, NT and USA locked horns in the third. The Mean Green held a 20-15 lead before South Alabama charged back to tie the score at 24 apiece on a kill from Hristina Markova. The next two pivotal points ended in North Texas attack errors and the Mean Green would never recover its swagger.
The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, Roxana Casvean, was once again North Texas’ biggest offensive weapon. The sophomore pounded home 14 kills, which gives her double-digit outings in five of her last six matches.
Amy Huddleston and Salah Schoenecke weren’t far behind with nine and eight kills, respectively. Marelle Lepmets was sharp at setter with a match-best 41 assists.
The Mean Green had been stellar on the block against both Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky, but had the tables turned against them against USA. The combo of Brittany Blackwelder and Markova combined on nine blocks as the Jaguars scored on 16 total team blocks.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday versus Troy in Dig for the Cure 2008. The Mean Green will be taking donations for each dig and all proceeds will go towards the Susan G. Komen foundation. Check out MeanGreenSports.com for further details.
