Mean Green Set For Road Matchup With Defensive-Geared Charlotte
North Texas Takes on Conference Leader in Blocks, Opponent Hit Percentage
DENTON - The North Texas volleyball team will put its seven-game win streak on the line as it concludes a Conference USA roadtrip against Charlotte at noon Sunday.
The Mean Green (19-2, 6-1 C-USA) are 3-2 all-time against the 49ers (17-6, 4-3 C-USA) after sweeping them in Denton last season. Then-freshman Emma Eakin led North Texas with 14 kills in that match, and Amanda Chamberlain and Holly Milam joined Eakin in double-digits with 13 and 11, respectively.
A defensive-minded Charlotte team could pose an issue to the Mean Green, who rank in the top 10 nationally in kills per set (5th, 14.88) and attack percentage (9th, .302). The 49ers lead the conference and rank in the top 15 of NCAA Division I in blocks per set (4th, 3.14) and opponent attack percentage (12th, .153).
"We're one of the better serving and passing teams in the conference, so if we can sustain that throughout the match, I think we'll be able to stay in system longer,"North Texas head coach Andrew Palileo said. "Both teams will have matchups that they're looking for, so whichever team stays in system longer will be able to create those favorable matchups."
Last weekend, North Texas claimed the first two matches of the three-game roadtrip against UTEP and Florida Atlantic, each in four sets. Chamberlain posted a team-high 37 kills and became the 11th player in school history to reach 900 career kills.
C-USA named three Mean Green players to its weekly award list as Chamberlain earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. Junior setter Karley York was named the league's Setter of the Week, and outside hitter Barbara Teakell earned Freshman of the Week honors.
York combined for 109 assists over the weekend, recording back-to-back 50-assist matches for the first time this season. Teakell recorded her first career 20-kill performance against FAU, to go with a pair of assists, 12 digs and four blocks. She finished the weekend with 34 kills and seven errors on 70 attempts (.386).
