North Texas Volleyball Match Notes
at South Alabama - Friday, 7 p.m.
at Troy - Saturday, Noon
DENTON, Texas – The North Texas volleyball team is winless in four Sun Belt road matches this year, but finds itself starting a crucial four-match road swing. As far as seeding for the Sun Belt Tournament is concerned, the Mean Green would do itself a world of good with a pair of wins this weekend.
NT would miss the eight team league tournament if it were to start today, but is only a half match behind UALR and ULM for the final spot. The first two challenges for the Mean Green come this weekend in the form of the Troy Trojans and the South Alabama Jaguars.
Troy features one of the Sun Belt’s top defensive units thanks to sophomore Courtney Cohen. She leads the league with 4.83 digs per set, and the Trojans average a Sun Belt-best 15.71 digs per set. As a result, Troy’s opponents are hitting just .171 on the year, which ranks fourth in the league.
Samia Salomao and Katariina Kananen are a dangerous duo for South Alabama, especially from the serving line. Salomao, a senior, and Kananen, a junior, both have 21 aces on the year for a Jaguars squad that ranks fourth in the Sun Belt with 1.35 aces per set.
