DENTON, Texas (10/20/08) - Roxana Casvean earned Sun Belt Volleyball Player of the Week honors following an electric performance against Western Kentucky on Sunday.
Casvean posted 16 kills on .419 hitting in the program’s first-ever win over Hilltoppers. The sophomore ignited a Mean Green offense that posted 41 total kills on .315 hitting and tallied just 13 attack errors. Casvean has reached double-digit kills in four of her last five matches, including 17 kill outings versus SMU and Florida Atlantic.
The award is North Texas’ first of the season.
North Texas pulled the Sun Belt’s upset of the season in beating RPI No. 15 Western Kentucky on Sunday, the highest ranked team ever knocked off by North Texas. North Texas hadn’t beaten the Hilltoppers in nine previous tries before Sunday. WKU, which knocked off two-time defending Sun Belt champion Middle Tennessee earlier in the year, was the SBC’s highest ranking team in the RPI rankings.
North Texas will be hosting Dig for the Cure during Sunday’s match against Troy. Both NT and Troy will don pink uniforms, and fans are encouraged to make a monetary pledge for each dig by both teams. The money collected will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help fight breast cancer. Fans can donate in person on Sunday or through meangreensports.com.
