DENTON, Texas (10/16/08) Middle Tennessee used a precision attack to dissect the North Texas volleyball team in a 3-0 win on Thursday night at the Mean Green Volleyball Center (25-22, 25-14, 25-18).
The Mean Green (3-17, 1-6 Sun Belt West) hung with the two-time defending Sun Belt champs in the opening set, but the Blue Raiders (15-3, 5-1 Sun Belt East) landed kills on nearly half of their attacks (40-of-81) on the night to power the win.
Roxana Casvean once again provided the offensive output for NT. The sophomore had six kills in the opening frame to keep the Mean Green in contention, and a team-best 11 kills overall on .261 hitting. Casvean also landed a pair of service aces and three digs.
The North Texas blockers kept one of the nation’s most potent weapons relatively at bay for much of the night. Ashley Asberry entered the match second in the country in attack percentage, but managed just six kills on .188 hitting versus NT. Salah Schonecke, Chelsea Cook, Amy Huddleston and Marelle Lepmets all got in on the blocking action.
Breanne Owens led North Texas’ back-line efforts with a team-high five digs. In all, seven Mean Green players recorded digs on the night.
North Texas takes two days off before battling Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. Action from the Mean Green Volleyball Center kicks off at 1 p.m.
