DENTON (10/16/06) Sophomore middle blocker Catherine Coffey was named Sun Belt Conference defensive player of the week on Monday after the Mean Green went 3-0 over the weekend.
Coffey played a key role for the Mean Green as the team picked up wins over Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, and division-leading New Orleans.
The wins helped to propel North Texas into a three-way tie for first place in the SBC Western Division.
Coffey finished with 18 kills (2.00 kpg) and 11 blocks, including five solo blocks, in the three matches. She stepped up her game against UNO by posting six bocks to go along with seven kills against the Privateers.
She was not only dominant, but also efficient against UL-L as she put up a .438 attack percentage with eight kills and four blocks against the Ragin’ Cajuns.
Coffey ranks third in the Sun Belt in blocks this season with 1.21 per game. Her 41 solo blocks are 17 more than her closest competitor.
This is the second time Coffey has been named to this honor, and the second consecutive Mean Green player to take the award after Jessica Hulsebosch was named player of the week one week ago.
