DENTON, Texas (10/11/09) - A potent Florida International duo was too strong for the North Texas volleyball team in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) win over the Mean Green on Power In Pink Day.
The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year, Yarimar Rosa, landed 19 kills and Jovana Bjelica had 18 for FIU (17-2, 6-0 Sun Belt), which topped the Mean Green (7-13, 3-3 Sun Belt) despite 27 attack errors.
The Mean Green donned pink jerseys and socks in honor of Power In Pink Day, a volleyball specific program that raises money for breast cancer research. In lieu of admissions to the match North Texas took donations for the cause.
Kati Dillard and the Mean Green blocking efforts kept the Golden Panthers off kilter all afternoon. Dillard was behind five blocks and freshman Brittany Brown sent back four.
Amy Huddleston also tallied three blocks to go with her team-high eight kills. The junior racked up 16 kills combined in the two matches this weekend, and now has 709 career kills to her credit. She needs just 93 more to tie for 10th in North Texas history.
North Texas now hits the road next weekend to start a four-match road swing, starting with Middle Tennessee on Oct. 16 and Western Kentucky on Oct. 17.
