BOCA RATON, Fla. (10/10/08) The Mean Green volleyball team snagged the first set from Florida Atlantic, but sloppy play and a potent Owl block topped North Texas 3-1 on Friday (24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21).
Florida Atlantic (10-7, 3-2 Sun Belt East) blocked 16 Mean Green (3-15, 1-4 Sun Belt West) attacks, including a match-high nine blocks from Katie Arvidson, the most by a North Texas opponent this year.
As if the Owls blockers weren’t enough, North Texas shot itself in the foot to the tune of 42 attack errors. The match marked just the second time since 2004 that the Mean Green had over 40 attack errors, and the first since mid-2007.
Roxana Casvean had a near-career night with 17 kills and 12 digs. The outing is just the second double-double of the sophomore’s career. Salah Schoenecke also managed double digit kills with 10 versus FAU.
Kayla Saey earned the start, but the Mean Green split time at setter with Marelle Lepmets. The sophomore led way with 23 assists off the bench, while the freshman tallied 18.
Sarah Willey led three North Texas players with at least 10 digs. Willey racked up 14 digs, with Casvean and Breanne Owens both digging up 12. Owens, a freshman, also posted a pair of service aces.
North Texas now travels down the road to Miami to face Florida International on Sunday at noon.
