DENTON, Texas (10/07/07) The Mean Green volleyball team followed up its best match of the season with another top-drawer performance, downing Florida Atlantic in three games, 30-21, 30-23, 30-27.
Two days after knocking off the Sun Belt East Division leaders, Florida International, North Texas (7-13, 3-3 SBC West) used its serving to dominate the Golden Panthers’ in-state rivals to climb back into the conference picture.
North Texas landed 15 team service aces on Florida Atlantic (6-12, 3-5 SBC East), which is the most by a Mean Green squad since 2002. NT was led by a career-best six aces from libero Jessica Hulsebosch, who also added 16 digs on the day.
Facing a sluggish start against the Owls, North Texas rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to take the lead at 13-12 on an Ashley Waggoner ace one of seven aces in the first game alone for the Mean Green. NT also powered past FAU with a .375 attack percentage in the opening frame.
The Mean Green fought through a back-and-forth battle in the final game for the sweep. Heather Maddox, who posted over 13 assists per game this weekend, tied the game at 20 apiece, before Erica Wendell sealed the match with a pair of blocks in the closing points.
North Texas attacked with a fury against the Florida duo of FIU and FAU, slamming home a .350 hitting percentage and 93 kills on the weekend.
The Mean Green hits the road for a trio of away matches in the Pelican State next weekend. NT faces New Orleans on Friday, Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday and Louisiana at Monroe on Sunday.
