DENTON, Texas (9/27/08) Roxana Casvean and Amy Huddleston both poured in a dozen kills each for the North Texas volleyball team, but it wasn’t enough in a 3-1 loss to Denver in the Sun Belt opener (25-14, 16-25, 25-13, 25-17).
After a sluggish start, the Mean Green (2-11, 0-1 Sun Belt West) collected itself to take the second set from DU (12-2, 1-0 Sun Belt West). Led by Casvean’s seven kills on nine attacks, NT landed 42.9 percent of its attempts en route to a dominating frame.
Unfortunatly, North Texas couldn’t sustain the intensity and allowed the Pioneers to take the next two sets. Emmy Davidsmeyer and Jacqueline Paul led the way with 10 kills each for a Denver offense that registered a .293 attack percentage overall.
The Mean Green back line was as active as ever, as three players reached double-digit digs. Breanne Owens led the way with 13 digs while Salah Schoenekce and Sarah Willey each had 11. As a team, North Texas out-dug Denver by a 55-34 margin.
Last week, it appeared as though the Mean Green might have turned the corner in the error department, but NT was off its game against DU. North Texas committed 27 attack errors and 12 service errors, which didn’t help its cause against an already potent Denver squad.
North Texas continues its home stand on Thursday against Louisiana-Monroe and on Friday versus Louisiana-Lafayette. New Orleans invades the Mean Green Volleyball Center on Sunday.
