DENTON (9/24/04) -- The North Texas volleyball team (2-10, 1-0) picked up a 3-0 (30-15, 30-21, 30-23) victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (3-11, 0-1) in both team’s Sun Belt Conference opener Friday night at the Snake Pit.
The Mean Green was in control for the entire match, winning all three games by at least seven points in its second shutout victory of the season. North Texas posted a season-high .360 attack percentage, while the Ragin’ Cajuns managed to hit just .147.
The Mean Green was led by two players with double-figure kills, including Brittney Gregory with a match-high 17. Taylor Lawrence followed Gregory with 10 kills and was one of five North Texas players to post an attack percentage above .400. Anne Pope recorded a match-high .529 attack percentage, finishing with nine kills in 17 attempts with no errors.
Heidi Johnson posted a match-high 45 assists and narrowly missed her sixth double-double of the season with nine digs. Jessica Hulsebosch paced the Mean Green defensively, leading all players with 14 digs.
North Texas had its way for most of the first game, opening up a double-figure lead at 20-10 and eventually capturing a 15-point win. With the scored tied 10-10 in the second game, NT went on a 5-0 run and then outscored the Ragin’ Cajuns 15-11 the rest of the way.
The Mean Green took a 4-3 advantage early in the final game and while UL Lafayette kept it close for a while, NT never relinquished the lead. Leading 22-21, North Texas outscored the Ragin’ Cajuns 8-2 to close out the match.
The victory was North Texas’ fifth straight over ULL and it has now won its Sun Belt Conference opener each of the last four seasons. The Mean Green improved to 2-0 at home this season and, dating back to last year, has won five straight at the Snake Pit.
NT returns to the road for its next match, facing Middle Tennessee at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
