DENTON (9/22/03) -- North Texas senior outside hitter Corina Marginas (Brasov, Romania) was named the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday after leading North Texas to a 3-1 record with victories over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UTEP and Oral Roberts.
Marginas posted a career-high .591 hitting percentage against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16 to lead the Mean Green past the Islanders 3-0. She recorded the first of her four double-doubles last week against the Islanders with 17 kills and 11 digs.
Marginas followed the TAMCC match up by earning a spot on the Mean Green Classic All-Tournament Team. She has now been named to three all-tournament teams this year and to six for her entire career. During the Mean Green Classic, she posted a season-high 36 kills and 15 digs in NT's victory over Oral Roberts, 16 kills and a season-high 24 digs in a win over UTEP and 22 kills and 17 digs versus LSU. Marginas' 36 kills against the Golden Eagles tie the third most in North Texas history for a single match.
For the entire week, Marginas averaged 6.5 kills and 4.8 digs per game. The Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year piled up 91 kills, 67 digs, five service aces and five total blocks. Marginas' 67 digs give her 1,047 over the last four seasons and make her the only player in North Texas history to record 1,000 or more digs for a career.
Marginas has now been named the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week five times throughout her career. She has 49 career double-doubles and 39 career matches with at least 20 kills. Marginas, who led the Sun Belt Conference in kills each of the last two seasons, is currently ranked second in the league with 4.56 per game. Already North Texas' career kills record holder with 1,829 to her credit, she needs just nine kills to overtake New Orleans' Kristin O'Hearne (1992-95) as the Sun Belt Conference's fifth all-time kills leader.
