DENTON, Texas (9/21/07) Apparently owning the program’s all-time records for digs in a match, season and career isn’t good enough for Jessica Hulsebosch. With those marks already in the bag, the senior is somehow finding new records to break as the Mean Green volleyball team enters Sun Belt play tonight against UALR.
Hulsebosch, the reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, has racked up four-straight 20-dig matches - with each match going only three games. That’s good for an incredible 7.17 digs per game over that span, which is the highest four-match average in school history.
With another 20-dig effort against UALR she would tie her own school-record for consecutive 20-dig matches set last year.
Stephen F. Austin tripped up the Mean Green on Tuesday, but North Texas’ second season begins tonight against UALR at 7 p.m. NT kicks off Sun Belt Conference play against the Trojans, who are riding a five match winning streak that includes wins over Memphis and Oral Roberts.
The Mean Green is 4-8 all-time against UALR, and Cassie Headrick, who played her college ball for the Trojans, is 4-5 against her alma mater.
What To Watch For
On the strength of Tuesday’s match, Brooke Engel now leads the nation with .89 service aces per game. The senior, who led the nation in 2006 with a school-record .98 average, landed four aces in three games against the Ladyjacks.
Erica Wendell has been filling up the stat sheets with her stellar blocking performances. The senior now holds the team lead with 49 on the year - 21 more than she had all of last year. Wendell needs only 20 more blocks to move into 10th all-time in career blocks in program history.
Kelsey Robins saw her first action of the season against Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday. The energetic freshman from McKinney, Texas tallied three digs on the night, including a crucial sprawling save that kept a North Texas four-point rally alive. Look for Robins to see additional action on the back line this season.
