NT Volleyball Splits Final Two Matches At Mean Green Classic

DENTON (9/20/03) -- The North Texas volleyball team (9-7) finished the Mean Green Classic with a 2-1 record after splitting its final two matches on Saturday with Oral Roberts (5-9) and LSU (5-7). NT knocked off tournament-champion Oral Roberts 3-1 in its early match, but fell 3-1 to LSU in its second contest.

ORU, LSU and North Texas all finished with a 2-1 record, but ORU was declared the tournament champion by point totals. The Mean Green defeated UTEP 3-0 on Friday and entered the tourney’s final match against LSU with a 2-0 record. Following the conclusion of the tournament, NT’s Corina Marginas (Brasov, Romania) and Brittney Gregory (Klein, Tex.) were named to the all-tournament team.

North Texas dropped its first game against Oral Roberts 30-16, but bounced back to win the matches final three games (30-27, 35-33, 30-27) behind Marginas’ season-high 36 kills. The 36 kills tie the third most in school history for a single match, which was already owned by Marginas. Gregory finished the match with a career-high eight blocks as well to pace North Texas to a season-high 12 blocks as a team.

The Mean Green hit .280 in comparison to the Golden Eagles .247 and finished with more kills, assists and digs.

NT looked like it was going to roll to the tournament championship, opening its match against LSU with a 30-10 game-one victory. However, LSU came back to win the final three games by scores of 30-21, 30-28, 30-26. The Mean Green hit .680 in the first game, but failed to hit over .200 in two of the final three games. LSU, on the other hand, improved its first game hitting percentage of .033 to over .300 in the last two games. North Texas still finished with a .287 attack percentage in comparison to LSU’s .228, but gave up 13 blocks to the Tigers.

Marginas again led the Mean Green with 22 kills, marking her fourth 20-kill performance of the season. Ruskowski finished with 18 kills and Kristin Sheppard narrowly missed her second triple-double of the season with 10 kills, 49 assists and eight digs.

Marginas recorded a double-double in all three North Texas matches, while Ruskowski finished with two and Sheppard with one.

LSU’s Regan Hood and Megan Heinz, UTEP’s Ashley Ripple and Oral Roberts Orieta Zuzich were also named to the Mean Green Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Mean Green Classic was NT’s final regular-season tournament of the season. It will travel to Ruston, Louisiana, for a match against Louisiana Tech on Tuesday before opening Sun Belt Conference play against Middle Tennessee on Friday at the Snake Pit.
