PRAIRIE VIEW (9/19/02) - The North Texas women’s volleyball team (5-9) swept its second straight opponent and won its third consecutive match Thursday night, defeating Prairie View A&M (4-8) 30-14, 30-18 and 30-16.
The Mean Green put the match away in just one hour and had no trouble improving its all-time record against the Panthers to 12-1. Led by Jill Ruskowski’s (Jr.; OH; Richmond, Tex.) match-high 13 kills, North Texas piled up 51 kills and posted a .323 hitting percentage. The Panthers, on the other hand, struggled to mount an offense all night, recording just 18 kills and hitting -.089 for the entire match.
"We served the ball well tonight and they had trouble getting their offense going," said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. "Our middle did a good job of establishing themselves early."
North Texas finished the match with 10 service aces, including three by Corina Marginas (Jr.; OH; Brasov, Romania) in just two games played. The Mean Green had at least nine players record at least one kill and five players that posted at least a .300 hitting percentage. Brittney Gregory (Fr.; MB; Klein, Tex.) had a solid game in the middle, finishing with 11 kills, one block assist and one block solo. Kristin Sheppard (Jr.; S; Texarkana, Tex.) narrowly missed a double-double with 44 assists and seven digs.
North Texas returns to the Snake Pit this Saturday to play Nicholls State in what will be its fifth home match in nine days. The match is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
