St. Louis, Mo. (9/17/04) -- The North Texas volleyball team (1-8) couldn’t overcome a powerful Saint Louis (4-5) offensive attack in a 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 30-19) setback in the first match of the Billiken Invitational on Friday.
Saint Louis came out on fire and only got stronger as the match went along and North Texas was unable to counter the Billikens offensive production. The Mean Green hit .187 in comparison to Saint Louis’ .413 attack percentage. The Billikens hit .327 in the first game and improved as the match progressed, hitting .472 in the second game and .485 in the third.
NT posted its best hitting percentage of the match in the second game at .229, but hit just .094 in the final game. The Mean Green’s Brittney Gregory stood out with a team-high 13 kills and .600 attack percentage. Gregory reached double-figure kills for the second consecutive match and for the fourth time this season.
While Gregory was the only North Texas players to reach double-figure kills, the Billikens had four players post at least 10 kills. Lauren Boissevain paced the Saint Louis attack with a match-high 15 kills.
The Mean Green was led defensively by Anne Pope with a career-high 11 digs. North Texas recorded 41 total digs, but had just two blocks and was hurt by seven reception errors. In addition to her team-high 28 assists, Heidi Johnson accounted for both North Texas blocks.
The Mean Green continues play at the Billiken Invitational on Saturday, facing Valparaiso at 2 p.m. and catching Saint Louis again at 7 p.m.
