NACOGDOCHES, Texas (9/16/08) Amy Huddleston started her 30th career match while Salah Schoenecke was starting her ninth. The duo combined for 30 kills, but it wasn’t enough for the North Texas volleyball team in a 3-1 loss at Stephen F. Austin (25-16, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19).
Huddleston, the veteran, posted a career high 14 kills on .444 hitting, while the transfer, Schoenecke, tallied a match-best 16-kills on .316 hitting. Former Southland Conference rivals, the second-set win for North Texas (1-8) marks the first time the Mean Green had taken a set off of the Lady Jacks (5-3) since 1997.
“I thought we gave ourselves a chance to beat a really talented SFA team, but we just couldn’t seal the deal,” said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. “When you play a team like this you just can’t let any opportunity pass. We ran with them all night, and I’m really proud of the way we played tonight.”
Attack errors had been the bane of the Mean Green this season, but North Texas had just 20 against the defending Southland Conference co-champions, its lowest total for a match that went longer than three sets. Unfortunately, the SFA offense posted a .284 attack percentage with three players in double digit kills. Setter Whitney Scott led the Lady Jack attack with 50 assists.
North Texas countered with a tough back line defense of Breanne Owens and Sarah Willey. Owens got underneath 17 digs and Willey recorded 12. As a team, North Texas put up five total blocks, led by setter Marelle Lepmets’ four assisted blocks.
The Mean Green returns to action this weekend in Hattiesburg, Miss. at the Southern Miss Invitaitonal.
