CHARLOTTE, NC (9/16/05) -- The North Texas volleyball team (4-9) opened play at the Spring Hill Suites Classic with a pair of convincing victories, defeating both Davidson (1-8) and Loyola (2-9) by 3-1 scores Friday at Halton Arena on the campus of UNC Charlotte.
The Mean Green knocked off Davidson 33-31, 30-16, 27-30, 30-19 before coming back to take down Loyola 30-24, 30-25, 23-30, 30-22. North Texas is now 2-2 in four-game matches this season and 4-1 over its last five outings. NT hit at least .203 in each match, marking the fourth time in its last five contests that it has posted a .200 or better attack percentage.
Sophomore Katy Prokof led North Texas with a career-tying 18 kills against Davidson, while freshman middle blocker Catherine Coffey tallied a career-high 15 kills and added a career-best six blocks. Junior setter Heidi Johnson recorded a season-high 51 assists in the match. Sophomore libero Jessica Hulsebosch was outstanding defensively, finishing the match with a season-high 30 digs that ranks as the fourth most in school history for a single match.
The Mean Green finished the match with 85 digs and 11 blocks, both season highs. It also recorded 62 kills on a .203 attack percentage and held Davidson to 50 kills and a .115 hitting percentage.
North Texas had four players register double-figure kills against Loyola, once again led by Prokof with 13. Erica Wendell and Brooke Engel each had 12 kills and Tara Hooser collected 11. The Mean Green ran a different setter and sophomore Ashley Bass responded with a career-high 54 assists, which is also the most by any North Texas player this year. Defensively, Hulsebosch recorded a team-high 16 digs.
NT finished the match with 61 kills, a .259 attack percentage, 55 assists, 57 digs and seven blocks. Loyola actually recorded five more kills and a higher hitting percentage than the Mean Green, but had 11 reception errors, seven ball handling errors and two block errors. Led by Johnson with a career-high five aces, NT’s 11 as a team were a season high.
North Texas will enter Saturday’s action at the Spring Hill Suites Classic with a chance to claim its first regular-season tournament championship since 2003. The Mean Green will play host Charlotte at 12:30 p.m. and close out play with a 5 p.m. match against Winthrop.
