DENTON, Tex. (9/14/04) -- Playing its first home match of the 2004 season, the North Texas volleyball team (1-7) overpowered Texas Southern (3-7) on Tuesday in a 3-0 (30-15, 30-20, 30-15) victory at the Snake Pit.
The Mean Green picked up its first victory in dramatic fashion, winning all three games by a double-figure margin and dominating every phase of the match. North Texas posted season-high numbers for kills, digs, assists and aces in a three-game match and recorded its best hitting percentage of the season at .229.
Leading 16-13 in the opening game, the Mean Green went on a 14-2 run to claim an early 1-0 lead. North Texas used a strong defensive performance in the game to set the tone for the match, posting 32 digs and holding the Lady Tigers to just three kills on 41 attempts.
NT raced out to an early lead in the second game and opened up a double-figure margin at 20-10 before going on to the 10-point win. Holding an 18-13 advantage in the second game, North Texas went on a 12-2 run to close out the match.
The Mean Green held the Lady Tigers to a .017 attack percentage and limited them to just 25 kills.
Led by Brittney Gregory and Anne Pope with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, the Mean Green saw four players record at least seven kills and three finish with at least nine. Heidi Johnson tallied a match-high 41 assists, while Katy Prokof led the team defensively with a career-high 15 digs. Prokof added nine kills, snapping a streak of four straight matches with double-figure kills.
North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick picked up her 60th career victory on the night, moving her into sole possession of third place on the school’s all-time win list. The victory also marked the second straight season North Texas has won its home opener. The last time the Mean Green won its first home match in back-to-back seasons was 1978-79.
The Mean Green returns to action this weekend, opening play at the Billiken Invitational on Friday at 12 p.m. against host-school Saint Louis.
