Mean Green Host Abilene Christian Ahead Of Mississippi State Tournament
North Texas Set for Four Games This Week
DENTON - The North Texas volleyball team will wrap up a four-game homestand against Abilene Christian at 6 p.m. Wednesday before heading to Starkville, Miss., to compete in the Mississippi State Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The Mean Green (8-1) face Southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi State Friday at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The team will wrap up tournament play against Jackson State on Saturday at 9 a.m.
North Texas is 5-1 all-time against the Wildcats. In their last meeting, the Mean Green outlasted ACU in five sets in the 2015 North Texas Invitational. The Mean Green are a combined 7-0 against Southeastern Louisiana (1-0) and Jackson State (6-0), but have a losing mark against Mississippi State (2-3)
The team is coming off another title-winning weekend, finishing 3-0 at the North Texas Challenge. The Mean Green downed Oregon State, New Orleans and Campbell, each in straight sets. Freshman outside hitter Barbara Teakell led the team in kills (30) and kills per set (3.33), and senior middle back Holly Milam posted a team-high 10 block assists to go with 26 kills and four aces.
Having won their last 12 sets, the team is nearing a program-record set winning streak of 18, established in 2014. The 2014 campaign also holds school records for best start (9-1) and longest winning streak (10), which this year's team is currently working toward.
Match One: North Texas vs. Abilene Christian (4-7)
After falling to 1-7 in their opening match of the Borderland Invitational, the Wildcats rebounded with three straight wins to close out the weekend. ACU is led by junior outside hitter Jacey Smith, who paces the team in kills (106) and aces (12) to go with 87 digs and 17 blocks.
Match Two: North Texas vs. Southeastern Louisiana (1-8)
The Lions picked up their first win of the season over Alabama State last Friday, but dropped their last two matches of the weekend at the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational. SELU is led by sophomores Savannah Alcazar and Chloee Holden, who each have 52 kills.
Match Three: North Texas vs. Mississippi State (7-5)
The Bulldogs return home to host the tournament after going 2-2 in Houston. Mississippi State lost two of three to open Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup play, but capped the weekend with a five-set victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. The Bulldogs' biggest weapon is senior middle blocker Jelena Vujcin, who leads the team in kills (165) and aces (15).
Match Four: North Texas vs. Jackson State (1-9)
The Tigers enter the Mississippi State Tournament on an eight-game skid in which they have won just three sets. Jackson State ranks second in the SWAC in opponent hitting percentage (.236).
