Volleyball Prepares For 27th Mean Green Classic

Sept. 11, 2014

DENTON — The Mean Green volleyball team, fresh off its first outright tournament championship since 2012, returns home to play host to Abilene Christian, Jackson State and Utah Valley in the 27th annual Mean Green Classic this weekend (Sept. 12-13) at the North Texas Volleyball Center.

After earning a share of the North Texas Invitational championship two weeks ago, the Mean Green took home hardware after winning the Texas State Delta Zeta Classic outright last weekend. North Texas battled back from a 2-0 deficit to pick up their first victory in program history over Wichita State in a thrilling five set match one. On day two of the tournament, North Texas rolled by Abilene Christian and host Texas state, both in 3-0 sweeps.

This week, North Texas has the opportunity to make program history yet again. Since its inception in 1976, the Mean Green Classic has only crowned a North Texas squad as its champion once; back in 1995 after a 4-0 slate in the tournament. The Mean Green are 47-58 all-time in the tournament’s 26 year history. Currently 6-1 overall in the 2014 season, North Texas is on pace for the best start in program history. If North Texas wins all three matches this weekend in the Mean Green Classic, the 9-1 start through 10 matches will eclipse the previous best of 8-2 achieved in 2012.

North Texas looks to take advantage of three struggling programs that have combined for a 1-21 record so far this season. Abilene Christian is still looking to take its first set of the season, while Utah Valley has dropped four matches to ranked opponents (#5 Washington, #10 BYU, #22 Kansas and #23 Creighton). The Mean Green’s only blemish on its record remains the five set narrow defeat to #15 Missouri.

The Mean Green Classic opens up play with a neutral site match between the Jackson State and Utah Valley at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 12 inside the North Texas Volleyball Center. North Texas will take on Abilene Christian afterwards at 7 p.m., in a rematch of last weekend’s 3-0 victory.
