CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Melanie Boykins landed 13 kills and Courtney Windham added 10 in leading the North Texas volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-15) sweep of UT-Pan American to open the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic.
North Texas (5-4) dominated the Broncs (1-8) 44-21 in kills thanks to the defensive work of the Mean Green back line. Sarah Willey piled up 20 digs, which are the fourth most by a Sun Belt player in a three-set match this year, and Eboni Godfrey just missed out on her second double-double with 13 digs and six kills.
The Mean Green set the tone early with 20 kills on .457 hitting in the first set. NT forced a sideout 66 percent of the time in the opening frame even with UTPA hitting a respectable .242.
The entire match featured just two lead changes as setter Kayla Saey helped the Mean Green climb on top early. The senior captain racked up 38 total assists – the third most by an SBC player in three sets.
North Texas returns to action Saturday against Towson (9-1) at 1 p.m. and tournament host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m.
