DENTON (9/9/06) The North Texas volleyball team (6-6) wrapped up the Mean Green Classic Saturday as they rallied for a four game (24-30, 32-30, 30-20, 30-19) victory over Sam Houston (3-4) at the North Texas Volleyball Center.
After defeating the Bearkats in Huntsville one week ago it was Sam Houston that was the aggressor as they won the first five points and eventually the first game. Sam Houston tallied 19 kills compared with to 9 for the Mean Green in game one.
Mean Green coach Cassie Headrick then witnessed her squad put things together midway through the second game and gain the momentum that sustained them throughout the remainder of the match.
Tara Hooser finished with 19 kills, one short of her season high, and freshman Heather Maddox came off the bench to top 50 assists for the third time this season.
Sophomore Catherine Coffey capped off her all-tournament effort with six kills and seven blocks, including four solo blocks.
Sam Houston posted three players in double-figures in kills, including 11 for Cynthia Yarotsky who was also named to the all-tournament team.
Other all-tournament selections included Nicole Crane of Texas Southern along with Laura Tomes and Eliane Santos of Oklahoma.
In the first game of the day the Oklahoma Sooners (8-2) defeated Texas Southern (0-7) in three games (30-12, 30-12, 30-18).
The Mean Green will take the court again in Chicago in the Illinois-Chicago Tournament. North Texas will open up with Western Michigan at 5 p.m. Friday. They will take on Illinois-Chicago and Western Illinois on Saturday.
The Mean Green will open up Sun Belt Conference play September 22 at Arkansas State.
