Box Score

BROOKINGS, S.D. (9/07/07) The Mean Green volleyball team opened play at the South Dakota State Jackrabbit Invitational with a 3-0 loss to its host, 27-30, 22-30, 20-30.

North Texas (1-7) was led by Katy Prokof, who dropped in 14 kills on the Jackrabbits (6-3), but it wasn’t enough as the Mean Green was swept for the fourth time this season.

Erica Wendell continued her string of impressive play with a trio of blocks against the Jackrabbits, and setter Heather Maddox added 32 assists in the losing effort.

The Mean Green continues play tomorrow with a showdown against Long Island at 11 a.m. That match will feature a head-to-head matchup against last season’s national service ace leader, NT’s Brooke Engel and the Blackbird’s Martina Wagner.

Engel, who had a pair of aces tonight, led the nation with .98 aces per game in 2006, followed closely by Wagner’s .97 aces per game. The senior now has 20 aces on the year, and is only nine aces away from the school record that is currently held by Corina Marginas.
