NT's Engel Wins Serving Showdown In Sweep Of Long Island

Box Score

BROOKINGS, S.D. (9/8/07) North Texas’ Brooke Engel won the serving battle and the Mean Green volleyball team won the war, sweeping Long Island 32-30, 30-27, 30-26.

Engel served up four aces in the highly anticipated matchup against Long Island’s Martina Wagner, helping the Mean Green (2-7) to a gritty win.

Engel and Wagner, who landed a pair of aces herself, ranked first and second in the nation in service aces last year Engel with .98 per game and Wagner with .97. Now with 24 aces on the young season, Engel is off to a great start in repeating the feat and setting a new school record for aces in a career.

The NT senior didn’t do it alone though, getting some help from fellow senior Katy Prokof. Prokof earned her second double-double of the season, racking up 13 kills and 11 digs against the Blackbirds (4-5).

Erica Wendell has turned into a Mean Green wall as of late. The senior has had at least three blocks in six consecutive matches, tying a career-high with eight against Long Island.

Jessica Hulsebosch and Katie Ruiz also checked in with double-digit digs, and Heather Maddox posted her sixth straight match with at least 30 assists. Freshaman Amy Huddleston also had 10 kills.

North Texas returns to action tonight against Montana at 5:30 p.m.
