DENTON (9/8/06) The North Texas volleyball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the 16th Mean Green Classic, sweeping Texas Southern in the morning match and then falling to Oklahoma in three straight games.
North Texas (5-6) never trailed against Texas Southern (0-6) and took the match in straight sets 30-19, 30-10, and 30-14. The Mean Green posted a season high for a single-game with a .520 attack percentage in the second game.
Catherine Coffey dominated the net with 10 kills and eight blocks, including five solo blocks. North Texas as a team finished with 44 kills and a .360 attack percentage.
In the second match it was the team from the Big 12 that had the edge at the net finishing with seven team blocks compared to two for the Mean Green. Brittney Gregory, Tara Hooser and Coffey each finished with eight kills; however, Eliane Santos and Joanna Schmitt combined for 30 Sooner kills while Rachel Jackson was credited with 45 assists.
The Mean Green found some success in the first game, holding the Sooners to a .130 attack percentage, but Oklahoma increased that number each game in the final two.
In other games it was Oklahoma sweeping Sam Houston state (3-3) and Sam Houston picking up a win against Texas Southern in sweep fashion as well.
The Mean Green Classic will conclude Saturday with the final two games. Oklahoma will play Texas Southern at 11 a.m. That game will be followed by North Texas versus Sam Houston.
