FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (9/7/02) The North Texas women’s volleyball team (2-7) fell 3-0 (23-30, 30-32, 28-30) against Tennessee-Martin (3-3) on Saturday in its final match at the Bank of Fayetteville Invitational.
The Mean Green gave Tennessee-Martin a tough match, dropping the last two games by just two points each and finishing the contest with three more blocks and just three fewer kills. North Texas posted a hitting percentage of .143 in comparison to UT-Martin’s .145. North Texas was hurt by seven ball-handling errors and five service errors.
Brieanne Fowler (Jr.; Odessa, Tex.) led the North Texas offensive attack with 18 kills and also had 16 digs for a double-double. Kristin Sheppard (Sr.; Texarkana, Tex.) finished with 35 assists and 18 digs, both team highs. The Mean Green was led at the net by Fowler, Anne Pope (So.; Aurora, Colo.) and Brittney Gregory (Fr.; Klein, Tex.), all with four blocks each.
North Texas finished the tournament 0-3, also dropping matches against Arkansas and Southern Mississippi. Corina Marginas (Jr.; Brasov, Romania) was the lone North Texas player named to the all-tournament team after recording 39 kills and 40 digs for the entire weekend. Host school Arkansas went undefeated to claim the tournament title.
North Texas returns home to host the Mean Green classic next Friday and Saturday. North Texas will play its first match of the tournament against Washington at 7 p.m. on Friday.
