TULSA, Okla. (9/06/08) The Mean Green volleyball team couldn’t jump start its offense in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-13) loss to Oral Roberts in the ORU Classic finale.
North Texas (1-5) hit .011 as a team and turned sideouts on just 41.9 percent of it 74 chances against the Golden Eagles (5-2). Roxana Casvean led eight Mean Green players with five kills.
Marelle Lepmets’ streak of five straight matches with at least 20 assists came to an end. The junior setter tallied 15 assists.
Sarah Willey posted her third straight match with double digit digs. The freshman tallied 10 digs to go with a service ace. Willey racked up 15 digs against UT Arlington and Fordham as well.
Earlier today, the Mean Green got the surge it needed in the fifth and deciding set, but couldn’t seal the deal against Fordham in a 3-2 (25-13, 18-25, 25-10, 18-25, 15-11) loss at the Oral Roberts Classic.
Breanne Owens landed an ace and Salah Schoenecke added a pair of aces to give NT a 9-6 lead in the fifth, but Christi Griffiths and the Rams (6-1) were able to regroup after a timeout. Griffiths blasted two of her match-high 15 kills and powered Fordham to a 6-1 run to clinch the set and the match.
Casvean powered the North Texas offense with 14 kills on .379 hitting. Schoenecke wasn’t far behind with 10 kills, and Brittani Youman had nine.
North Texas has now taken two of its last four opponents to the full five sets. UT Arlington and the Mean Green battled to five sets in the finale of the Mean Green Volleyball Classic last weekend.
The Mean Green returns to action next week against Utah Valley and Idaho State at the Utah Valley State Invitational.
