ROCHESTER, Mich. (9/05/09) - Amy Huddleston and the North Texas volleyball team fell in a thriller, 3-2, to Canisius at the Golden Grizzly Invitational opener.
Down 10-7 in the fifth and deciding set, the Mean Green (0-5) rallied to take a 13-10 lead on a kill by Brittany Youman. NT forced a match-point at both 14-12 and 15-14, but Canisius (2-3) finished off the Mean Green with a 17-15 win.
Huddleston slammed home 20 kills for the Mean Green, all assisted by Kayla Saey. The sophomore tallied a career-high 52 assists, which are the most by a North Texas player since 2007.
The Mean Green responded to a 25-23 loss in the first set with a resounding 25-18 set-two win thanks to Huddleston. The junior tallied seven kills and Salah Schoenecke had four in tying the match up at one win apiece.
Saey's kill extended NT's lead in the third set to 22-18, essentially sealing that set for the Mean Green.
The match saw the emergence of Brittany Brown, North Texas' 6-3 freshman middle blocker. Brown had 12 kills on .250 hitting and three blocks in the first real action of her career.
Jessica Green, Lacy Reasons and Sarah Willey all posted double-digit digs on the defensive end.
North Texas returns to action tomorrow against Oakland at 11 a.m. and Wright State at 2 p.m.
