DENTON (9/5/06) In the opening of the new North Texas Volleyball Center, the Mean Green could not hold off the TCU Horned Frogs, falling in five games (33-35, 28-30, 30-19, 30-22,15-6).
Over four hundred people came out to see the Mean Green (4-5) in their home opener and the crowd played a key role early on as North Texas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. But TCU (8-1) had too much energy and too much height and found holes in the North Texas defense to sweep the final three games and ultimately take the match.
Tara Hooser led the way in kills for the second consecutive game with 17 for North Texas, and Ashley Bass made her return with 40 assists.
“I just felt we played not to lose in the last three games,” Mean Green head coach Cassie Headrick said. “They found our weaknesses and attacked them.”
North Texas finished the first game with a .341 attack percentage, but could never get back over .083 in the final three games. The Mean Green had the edge in aces, led by Brooke Engel’s six, but the Horned Frogs had 31 more kills and five and a half more team blocks.
The Mean Green will take the court again on Friday and Saturday as they host the Mean Green Classic. Texas Southern, Oklahoma and Sam Houston State will field the remaining slots in the tournament. Oklahoma and Sam Houston kick off at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and North Texas will follow against Texas Southern at 1 p.m.
