North Texas Volleyball Team Eager For Win Column

Volleyball Game Notes

DENTON, Texas (9/4/07) The Mean Green volleyball team hits the floor tonight at 7 p.m. against Northwestern State (1-2) in search of its first win of the young 2007 season.

After facing some of the nation’s toughest competition in its opening weekend, North Texas (0-6) got its offense back on track during the Mean Green Volleyball Classic last weekend. Look for North Texas’ offensive numbers to keep rising as the squad continues to gel.

NT’s attack percentage after its first three matches was a dismal -.047, compared to a .124 mark in last weekend’s matches, and the Mean Green nearly doubled its kills from 6.56 per game in the opening weekend to 12.15 at the Classic. North Texas posted 66 kills against tournament champion Georgia State, a mark the squad eclipsed only twice last year.

Former Southland Conference foes, The Mean Green is 9-5 all time against the Northwestern State Demons, and 1-0 in the Cassie Headrick era.

NT will look to build up steam for this weekend’s trek to Brookings for the South Dakota State Jackrabbit Invitational, where the Mean Green will take on Long Island University in a matchup of last season’s national service ace leaders.

North Texas’ Brooke Engel led the country with .98 aces per game, nudging out the Blackbirds’ Martina Wagner who finished second in the nation with .97. So far this season, Wagner has posted 18 aces (.82 per game), but Engel isn’t far behind with 16 (.73 per game).
