DENTON, Texas (9/04/07) The Mean Green volleyball team scored its first win of the year in convincing fashion, sweeping Northwestern State 3-0 (30-26, 30-19, 30-19).
North Texas jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening game and never looked back. Catherine Coffey led the way with 11 kills and a stellar .625 attack percentage on 16 attempts.
Coffey and the Mean Green front line defenders kept the Demons off balance all night. NT posted 10 team blocks, led by the junior’s six assisted efforts. North Texas’ defensive wall forced Northwestern State to a .000 overall attack percentage and only 29 kills.
Erica Wendell added to the effort with seven kills on nine attacks, to go with four blocks. Jessica Hulsebosch had another 12 dig outing, and Heather Maddox tallied 40 assists for a second straight match.
The win snaps NT’s seven match losing streak just in time for the Mean Green’s six match road trip. North Texas heads to Brookings for the South Dakota State Jackrabbit Invitational this weekend, where Brooke Engel will face off against the only other player in the nation to post over 100 service aces in 2006.
Engel, who landed two aces tonight, led the nation last year with .98 per game. Long Island’s Martina Wagner finished second with .97. The pair will face off on Saturday at 11 a.m.
