Strong Start Not Enough For Volleyball At SMU

Box Score

DALLAS (9/2/09) - The North Texas volleyball team got the start it was looking for, but fell just short of knocking off the SMU Mustangs on Wednesday night, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-11).

Amy Huddleston paved the way again for the Mean Green, which hasn't beat SMU since 1996. The junior tallied 12 kills, while setter Marelle Lepmets dished out the year's first double-double of the year with a season-high 36 assists and 10 digs.

The Mean Green jumped out to a 3-1 lead to open the match on the strength of Roxana Casvean and Rachelle Wilson kills. Kati Dillard added a pair of kills in the middle to push the lead to 10-7 and knock SMU on its heels.

The quick start helped NT hang on to win the first set 25-22. Dillard and Amy Huddleston both poured in four kills, while setter Marelle Lepmets dished out 13 assists in the first frame.

The two squads traded jabs like a boxing match for much of the second frame. Neither team led by more than three points, before the Mustangs poured it on for to take the set.

Rachelle Wilson picked up right where she left off after earning all-tournament honors at the Mean Green Volleyball Classic. The transfer sophomore tallied eight kills on .353 hitting in the loss.

North Texas returns to action this weekend in Rochester, Mich., for the Golden Grizzly Invitational. NT faces Canisius on Saturday at 3:30, and Oakland and Wright State on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
